I've been struggling with a side character, the best friend of my main character. She's funny, and I gave her an addiction problem, but she's not memorable enough. You'd confuse her with other friends of the MC. So this week I've been forcing myself to think about her and come up with a better identity--something that would make her more REAL and unforgettable.
Thanks to my friend, Ruth, for the idea of making her an adoptee with ISSUES. And thanks to my friend, Lisa, an adoptee herself, for sharing some of her issues. And thanks to my friend, Barbie, for the use of her nickname and for adding even more issues to the pot! As Jim Heynan, an instructor at Iowa and a great writer, taught me: TROUBLE, TROUBLE, TROUBLE!
It's good to have friends who will share their problems and experiences! I don't know what I'd do if my friends were all well-adjusted... probably sell them insurance or cookware... And I don't suppose well-adjusted people would want to be my friends anyway.
Now, back to revising my novel!
