I don't remember the name of the famous writer who coined that phrase for the painful process of editing your own writing and taking out words, sentences, paragraphs, and even chapters that you REALLY LOVE. I'm struggling with it as I try to sharpen up my novel.
Peter Welling, my mentor and friend (and oft-published author), advised me to keep everything I cut out in a file on my computer, so that someday I can use it in another piece of writing. It helps me feel a little better about cutting out REALLY FUNNY STUFF that just doesn't fit. It's like having a beloved dead pet stuffed... it's gone, but I can still look at it and remember how wonderful it was... (insert heavy sigh here)
