Lots of the women I met in Iowa last week have similar lives--we're caring for husbands, children, and aging parents, and there are days when it sucks the life right out of us. On the other hand, this is the life I make fun of and write about, so it's a question of balance and perspective.
I tried to start a new novel recently about a woman coping with too many helpless/indigent/annoying relatives living in her house. One of the central characters was going to be the Mother in Law, whom she's never really liked, but now must care for. Hmmm... wonder who THAT character would be modeled after? Anyway, I realized that I'm not ready to write that book yet because I'm LIVING IT, and it's not all that funny to me yet. I'll need to find a way to "back away from it" and look at it with less emotion and more objectivity, before I'll be able to do justice to the subject.
I've got stories about it coming out of my... wazoo... but cheap giggles aren't enough. I want to break new ground, or at least bring something to it that's deeply human as well as very funny.
AND SPEAKING OF WHICH, HERE COMES MIL, OUT OF HER BEDROOM FOR THE START OF A NEW, CONFUSING DAY.... BYE FOR NOW!
